My Macedonian Army
This is my Macedonian army page. It contains pictures of the figures and units of my army. It is based on the Warhammer Ancients supplement, Alexander the Great. I can do both an Early and a Later (Imperial) army and can go to about 3500 points. I handle the standard/oracle differences by having extra unit standards and a ASB figure extra. My 2000 point army is:
Alexander, xystron and heavy armour with 2d6 oracles
1 Hypaspist pike block, light armour @24 figures with officer and musician
4 pike blocks ½ light armour ½ no armour (using the mixed armour rule) @24 figures each with officer and musician
1 Cretan archer @14 figures
1 Peltast unit @ 14 figures (javelins and buckler)
1 Mercenary archer @14 (bow)
1 Mercenary javelin men @14
2 Heavy ballista w/ 3 crew, light armour and shield*
*I hate doing this as using Ballista in a set piece battle is hokey, but I know there may be a few armies I have to fight that they may come in handy. There also, isn’t anything really useful I could buy with 100 points, so what the heck. I am lucky to get one hit in the three game I play anyway, so they have more of a physiological effect on my opponents rather than an actual threat.
I have not purchased any companions as they are very expensive and the wedge is not a particularly good formation for cavalry. A companion unit would eat nearly 25% of my points. Rumor has it, that a change will be made only allow Alexander if companions are purchased. That is a bummer, as I will have to amend my list to this:
1 Army General
1 ASB
1 Hypaspist pike block, light armour @24 figures with officer, standard and musician
4 pike blocks ½ light armour ½ no armour (using the mixed armour rule) @24 figures each with officer, standard, and musician
1 Cretan archer @15 figures
1 Peltast unit @ 15 figures (javelins and buckler)
1 Mercenary archer @15 (bow)
1 Mercenary javelin men @15
2 Heavy ballista w/ 3 crew, light armour and shield
I will switch to a later army that can use standards as I am afraid to run the risk of a bad oracle die roll at the start of a game. With Alexander I could reroll the oracle roll.
Macedonians are a strong army and get better the higher the points. The only army I really dead against is a character and berserker laced Viking army. A Chinese army with frenzy capable heavy chariots is also a bad day waiting to happen. Once the Successors book comes out, I will probably use the Pyrrhic army list as it is nearly the same with the addition on an elephant.
The figures I used for my army are all by Foundry from their Age of the Greeks range. They are gorgeous figures with lots of variety sculpted by Steve Saleh. Originally I had used Vendel Macedonians, but I acquired a few pike men from Scott Hayes and after painting them up, I decided to switch to Foundry figures. Luckily I found a few sales and was able to get the bulk of the figures before Foundry raised their prices. I have picked up bits and pieces on eBay and on TMP to fill out the army. I still have some figures to paint, but I can easily fill out a solid 3000 point army. I have gamed with this army for several years now. Note I did not use the Macedonian pike men from the Foundry range but the Successor and Mercenary pike men. First off that is what I was able to get my hands on, and various sources differ on how well equipped Macedonian pike men were. So I went with guys with sandals, a mix of greaves/ no greaves and etc.
